nbsp; nbsp;Obstructive sleep apnea(OSA) is considered to be prevalent in psychiatric patients, while it is commonly overlooked or underdiagnosed. The incidence of OSA in major psychiatric illnesses including depressive disorders and schizophrenia is high and vice versa. The cause of the high comorbidity is that OSA and psychiatric diseases have many clinical symptoms in common and OSA aggravates the symptoms of psychiatric diseases. The pathophysiology of the comorbidity is not clear, however, it is presumed that sleep apnea, desaturation, and increased cytokine affect the psychiatric symptoms. Furthermore, OSA is aggravated by the psychotropic medications which can induce weight gain and metabolic syndrome, benzodiazepines causing respiratory suppression and the inactive lifestyle due to psychiatric symptoms such as depression and negative symptoms. There are substantial evidences showing difficulties in treating foregoing psychiatric symptoms in case of co-existence of the OSA and proving the importance of treating the OSA in order to improve the psychiatric symptoms. The future studies in this field would be valuable because there are few studies conducted in Korea. |
