Landslides of ancient burial mounds, the Imashiro-zuka and the Nishimotome-zuka, induced by the historical earth-quake corresponding to the tectonic movement of the active fault systems from northern Osaka to Kobe were discussed. Obvious interior structures of landslides revealed the deformation process of the landslides, and provided the significant information to discuss the landslide mechanism. The geological conditions of the basement of the mounds, the lithology, stiffness of the basement, and the position to the fault systems, should be significant to collapse of the mounds. Landslides of the embankments (fills) should be unavoidable over a long period of time when any weakness is shown in the basement of the mounds, in other words, the total quality of artificial soil structure much depends on the conditions of its basement. The ancient burial mounds in Kinki district were distributed from coastal region to hills overlapping the modern urban regions. The landslides of the ancient burial mounds indicate the important issues of our modern society. |
