Micro-study was performed with a microscope to ascertain the cause why consolidation yielding stress under the unsubmerged condition is greater than it is under the submerged condition. The study discovered a little that the consolidation yielding stress of Kanto Loam is a load strong enough to destroy the allophane composed of clay mineral that is the main constituent particles of Kanto Loam. It was also discovered a little that under the unsubmerged condition, atoms attract each other with electrostatic action, thus creating a strong ion binding; however, once the allophane particles are submerged and applied stress the composition is partly decomposed into Si 4+ ion and O 2- ion. Furthermore, the study indicated that if stress is applied to these submerged samples, they are decomposed more easily than unsubmerged samples. Accordingly, these findings can indicate the cause why consolidation yielding stress (P c ) under unsubmerged condition is greater than it is under the submerged condition. It is considered that clarification of mechanism relevant to allophane particles as exhibited in this case can contribute for study one of the fundamental and geo-mechanical data on Kanto Loam. |
