BACKGROUND/AIMS: Domperidone and itopride are prokinetic drugs for the treatment of dysmotility-type functional dyspepsia. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of domperidone and itopride in the treatment of dysmotility-type functional dyspepsia. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-four patients with more than moderate symptoms of dysmotility-type functional dyspepsia were recruited in a prospective parallel comparison study. They were randomized and treated with either 10 mg of domperidone t.i.d. (76 patients, domperidine group) or 50 mg of itopride t.i.d. (78 patients, itopride group) for 14 days. The treatment efficacy measured by physicians global evaluation was percent of patients who showed excellent (=75% improvement in total symptom score from baseline) or good (=50% improvement in total symptom score) responses. RESULTS: In both domperidone and itopride groups, dyspeptic symptoms of the patients improved significantly. Postprandial abdominal fullness and epigastric bloating sense were markedly decreased without significant difference in both groups. Epigastric lump sense was more improved in the domperidone group than in the itopride group. The treatment efficacy in domperidone group was 75% and 66.7% in itopride group. However, the difference was not significant. Additionally no serious adverse events were reported. CONCLUSIONS: Domperidone and itopride are similarly effective in the treatment of dysmotility-type functional dyspepsia. |
