Scriba achieved high character marking rates and replaced pad printing and hot stamp printing as much more cost effective process. The resultant marks are machine readable. 2 The marking of printed circuit boards (PCB's) is required for reasons of identification and traceability. Bar-codes or 2D codes are commonly used for automatic handling and identification systems where legible marks need to be read at high speed. A laser generated 2D code provides a small footprint on a densely packed PCB. 3 The marking of contactors required text and logos which need to comply with different standards for different markets. Scriba quickly produces a durable high contrast mark which includes symbols as appropriate and without any change of tooling. Moving from marking in one language to another is achieved in seconds offering a Just-in-Time (JIT) approach to component on product marking. 4 A metal electronic package required very small characters at high speed while remaining readable to the human eye. Scriba produced 18 characters and symbols in less than 0.5 seconds for this application although much higher marking rates are possible. 5 The thin titanium shell of an electronic heart pacemaker required a mark which was permanent non-toxic and did not place any stress or force on the device. The Scriba automatically serialised the pacemakers to give each one a unique code.Laser can be used on metals (including hardened steel) and plastics producing a high quality mark quietly. The laser marks alphanumeric text barcodes 2D machine-readable codes symbols and logos.
