Confocal scanning method of CSU-22 is based on the Nipkow disk scanner; an optical scanner using rotation of a disk with pinholes to produce an image. While a Nipkow scanner is good at fast scanning its optical eficiency is too low to capture dark fluorescent imae. By placing a microlens array in front of the Nipkow disk the optical efficiency of the unit is greatly improved (about two orders). In addition CSU-22 is designed to minimize the background inside the system so that it can realize high signal to noise ratio..
